Headquarters of the Rinzai sect Myoshinji school with 3500 subordinate
temples throughout the country. In 1342 the retired priest-emperor Hanazono
had his private villa rededicated as a Zen temple. Although many of the
original buildings were lost during the Onin War (1467-1477) the temple
eventually rose to prosperity. With assistance from influential and wealthy
patrons it expanded to include more than 90 sub-temples and other structures.
From sliding screen paintings to Buddhist images gardens the oldest bell

is truly a treasure house of history and artistic achievement.
