Main temple of the Rinzai sect Tofukuji school. Built as a family temple
for a court advisor. Construction of 7 buildings was completed in 1255.
The Zen-style structures including the oldest Main Gate from that era
(National Treasure) the bathhouse toilet meditation hall and bell pavilion
(Important Cultural Properties) give invaluable information on the lifestyles
of Zen monks in the Muromachi period. The bridge Tsutenkyo gives an excellent
view of autumn leaves. More than 5000 cultural treasures including registered
National Treasures are in the temple's possession.
