Head temple of the Shingon sect Toji branch. Built for the protection
of the nation in 796 two years after the founding of Heiankyo (now Kyoto).
In 823 it was handed to Kukai (Kobo Daishi founder of the Shingon sect).
The Kodo (Lecture Hall; Important Cultural Property) holds 21 Buddhist
images at the centre of which is Dainichi Nyorai the supreme deity in
Esoteric Buddhism. The Godai-Myo-o (5 Great Myo-o) are National Treasures.
This arrangement is said to be a 3-D representation of the Mandala. The
five-storied pagoda is a National Treasure and at 57 metres the tallest
in Japan. The Treasure House contains a vast collection of cultural assets
relating to Shingon Buddhism. In December 1994 Toji Temple became part
of the World Cultural Heritage.
